Meaningful Materials: EcoVero

At matty m, we design garments using fabrics that feel good on your body and do good for the planet.

There’s something so comforting about slipping on your favorite linen dress or relaxing at the end of the day in your softest sweater. If you’re like us, you always take a moment to luxuriate in the feel of these fabrics against your skin. The materials in our clothing are intimate, personal, and important—and they all originated from somewhere in the textile industry.

From the cotton on your favorite pair of sheets to the upholstery on your furniture, these materials have already undergone a complex journey through the textile industry before finally ending up in your life. But how much do you really know about these materials?

While the fashion industry hasn’t always been kind to mother earth, we’re dedicated to intentionally crafting garments with meaningful materials you can feel good about.

Why Meaningful Materials Matter

Do you know how much water it takes to create the material in your clothing? Is it crafted from renewable sources? What kind of carbon footprint is created by manufacturing and distributing them?

The truth is that the textile industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions. Many garments are produced using non-renewable energy sources, chemical dyes require large amounts of water while also contributing to groundwater pollution, and many synthetic fabrics shed harmful particles when washed. Even producing a shirt made of cotton requires enough water that a person could survive on it for three years.

If this is all new information, don’t feel bad. Few apparel brands are transparent regarding the impact of their fabric supply chain. Considering the massive impact the textile industry has on the environment, however, we think it’s time to change.

EcoVero: Fabric Worth Celebrating

In an effort to design garments you can actually feel good about, we’ve partnered with LENZING™ ECOVERO™. They’re setting a new standard for eco-responsible viscose in the fashion industry, and their fabrics are intentionally crafted to take less and give more to the planet.

Using certified renewable wood sources, their fabrics are manufactured with up to 50% lower water impact. On top of using less water, they also clean any water used in production before returning it to nature. During this process, they also generate 50% less CO2 emissions than typical textile production. Finished fibers are certified with the EU Ecolabel, and now you can enjoy these eco-friendly fibers in pieces like our Colfax Summer Cardigan.
